Michell Allert

Operations Manager
Michell has been working in the nonprofit sector for over 18 years, providing financial management and administrative assistance to several organizations.  Her passion is to be  a part of the movement seeking to help individuals  improve their quality of life, mentally,  physically and emotionally. In her spare  time, she is a facilitator for a local mental health agency  presenting workshops geared towards developing healthy home environments for youth and their parents.  Michell holds a BS in Technical Management – Small Business Management from DeVry  University and has completed much of her studies towards earning a MS in Accounting from  Liberty University and MS in Business Administration from Keller Graduate School of Management.

  

Clancey Bateman, MS, MPH

Policy Consultant
Clancey Bateman, MS, MPH, is a public health consultant at JSI with a background in food policy, nutrition, and health communications. Working with multiple public health departments in California, she has conducted research on the health and economic impacts of obesity and sugar-sweetened beverages, evaluated multi-sector efforts to create healthy communities, and developed social marketing and behavior change campaigns. She previously led media and communications strategy, content development, and implementation for successful soda tax campaigns in Berkeley and Oakland, CA. Prior to her work at JSI, Ms. Bateman served as an evaluation consultant for Wholesome Wave Foundation’s Fruit & Vegetable Prescription (FVRx™) program that combines pediatric obesity counseling and nutrition education with farmers’ market vouchers in underserved communities. Ms. Bateman received both a MPH and a MS degree in Food Policy & Applied Nutrition from Tufts University’s Friedman School of Nutrition & Science Policy.

  

Sally Lawrence Bullock, PhD, MPH

Research Consultant
Sally has more than 10 years of experience in public health research, evaluation, data collection and analysis, and project management. As a Research Assistant at the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention she was involved in a number of projects focused on obesity and chronic disease prevention. As an Associate at Samuels & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in public health research and evaluation, she managed several projects evaluating nutrition and physical activity policies and programs at hospitals, schools, communities and other locations across the state of California. Dr. Bullock also served as a Program Specialist with the Maternal and Family Health Administration of the DC Department of Health, and in this position conducted research to inform program development in oral health, obesity prevention and youth violence. Dr. Bullock received a PhD from the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, an MPH from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, and an undergraduate degree in biology from UC Davis.

  

Jim Krieger, MD, MPH

Executive Director
Dr. Jim Krieger, the founding executive director of Healthy Food America (HFA), is a nationally recognized expert in the development and evaluation of community-based programs to prevent and control chronic disease. In his previous role as Chief of the Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention Section at Public Health - Seattle & King County, his work led to broad improvements in school nutrition and physical activity, creation of the nation’s second menu labeling regulation, reduced exposure to sugary drinks, expanded access to healthy foods for low income people, support for healthier built environments, and adoption of smoke-free policies for all public housing units. Jim’s work has been funded by NIH, CDC, HUD and many private foundations.

Jim, who is a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Health Services at the University of Washington, was a member of the Institute of Medicine Committee on Childhood Obesity Action for Local Governments in 2008-2009 and on its Committee for Evaluating Progress in Obesity Prevention in 2012-2013. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the US Secretary of Health and Human Services Innovation in Prevention, the HUD Healthy Homes Innovation, and the US EPA Children’s Environmental Health Excellence Awards. Jim received his undergraduate degree at Harvard, completed his MD at the University of California, San Francisco in internal medicine, and received his MPH at University of Washington.

  

Kirsten Leng

Research Consultant
Kirsten is a public health nutritionist with experience managing nutrition and obesity prevention initiatives in the non-profit, government, and academic settings. She joins HFA with a broad base of practice that includes partnership building, data collection and evaluation, strategic planning, and community-level policy development. She is passionate about health equity and access to healthy foods as a basic human right. Kirsten is a Registered Dietitian and holds a Masters in Public Health from the University of Washington where she focused her studies on maternal and infant nutrition. She received her BA degree in Cultural Anthropology from Duke University.
